In The ZOUD
In The ZOUD is where we stop avoiding the hard conversations about Equity, Diversity and Inclusion - and start saying the things people usually whisper, avoid, or soften.
Hosted by Sylvia Stevenson, this podcast takes you into the Zone of Uncomfortable Debate - the place where real learning happens, assumptions get exposed, and leadership is tested. No sugar-coating. No corporate gloss. Just direct, meaningful conversations with people who are willing to name the truth about culture, power, race, identity and inequality.
If you’re tired of performative statements, tick-box strategies and safe conversations that change nothing, this is your space. Here, we ask the questions that make people shift in their seats — because that’s where change begins.
Welcome to In The ZOUD — if it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change anything.

What happens when people stop talking? Not because they agree, or because everything is fine, but because they've stopped believing anything will change?
Over the coming weeks, I'll be launching a new 7-part podcast series called Silence Won't Do It, part of In the ZOUD – the Zone of Uncomfortable Debates.
We're living through a period of significant change. Organisations are under pressure, leaders are under pressure and many employees are trying to make sense of increasingly complex conversations about culture, inclusion, fairness and belonging.
In that climate, it can be tempting to avoid difficult conversations altogether.
But what happens when silence becomes the strategy? Through honest reflection and thoughtful challenge, this series will explore workplace culture, psychological safety, trust, leadership and the role we all play in creating environments where people feel able to contribute, question and belong.
This podcast is an introduction to the series. Episode 1 coming soon.
What conversation do you think organisations are avoiding right now because it feels uncomfortable?

Welcome to In the Zoud Podcast. I'm Sylvia Stevenson. Now, just in case you're wondering what Zoud stands for, it's the zone of uncomfortable debate. This is a place where we step into conversations that many people may be thinking about, but few are having openly. Now, this isn't a podcast about having all the answers, right? It's a space for honest reflection, thoughtful challenge, and courageous conversation about the issues shaping our workplaces, our leadership, and our experiences at work. Now, in this series, we're exploring a simple but important idea, and that is silence won't do it. I feel like I need to repeat that again. Silence won't do it. We know that across health and social care, and indeed across many sectors, we're operating in a climate of significant change. I mean, you cannot miss it. There is stress on every level, at every site, right across the system, there is a climate of significant change. Organizations are clearly under pressure. Leaders are under pressure. Staff at every level are under pressure. And at the same time, conversations about inclusion, fairness, belonging, culture, and difference have become increasingly complex. And dare I say, for some, they've become increasingly uncomfortable. And perhaps that's the risk we face that we don't talk about this enough. You see, because the opposite of inclusion isn't disagreement. I believe the opposite of inclusion is disengagement. Because when people stop contributing, stop challenging, stop questioning, and stop sharing their experiences, I believe organizations lose something very important. And that's not because everyone needs to agree, but because progress depends on people staying in the conversation. So let me ask some questions here that I want us to explore in this series. I mean, there are questions like: what happens when we stop talking? What happens when organizations become reluctant to discuss the things that matter most to people's experience at work? What happens when difficult conversations are avoided in the name of keeping the peace? And what happens when silence begins to replace curiosity, learning, and understanding? Because whether we're talking about leadership, culture, inclusion, psychological safety, or speaking up, I firmly believe that silence rarely solves anything. So, over the next few episodes, I'll be inviting you to think differently about some of the assumptions we make. I want to invite some challenge on some of the narratives that we've become comfortable with and together with you explore what it really takes to build workplaces where people can thrive. So, wherever you're listening from, whether you're a leader, a manager, a clinician, a frontline worker, a union rep, or simply someone who cares about workplace culture, I want to thank you for joining me. Together, let's step into the Zoud because silence won't do it.
